“would you like to go to Manchester for the Ecommerce Expo on Thursday Lisa?”
“Would I? Em yeah…!”
“Great the train to Preston leaves Glasgow Central at 5.40am.”
Brilliant my first company trip away to an interesting and exciting sounding exhibition in Old Trafford football stadium no less; I was very excited. Even the thought of getting up at 4am and getting home at midnight couldn’t deter me…no way. I was a little apprehensive of how the world looked at that time of the morning. Would I be able to function normally? Would I be able to speak? Just about was the answer to those two questions! So off Calum and I sped on the 5.40 train from Central full of anticipation with the amount of new knowledge we were going to came back with and have at our disposal when the time came for dazzling with our E commerce know how.
As I previously mentioned we were attending the eCommerce Expo and Technology for Marketing & Advertising events in Manchester. Here at PoLR we like to make sure we are aware of the changes that take place in the ever evolving industry that we operate in; we were after inspiration and new ideas.
The event was going to constitute of a number of different exhibitors in the main section, four keynote speakers from Econsultancy, Google, imrg and WorldPay whose main topics would be the present state and future directions of the elements affecting online selling. Covering such areas as; multi-channel retailing and utilising the mobile channel as seemed to be the main focus of the day. Also spanning current industry trends and market figures and different online payment strategies.
There was also a comprehensive seminar programme which constituted most of our day as this was where we would gain the majority of inspiration and new knowledge from. I am just going to summarise the seminars we went to to give you an idea and feel for what the day was about and to make you jealous at our now in depth, cutting edge insider knowledge!
A muti-channel update: where to find new buyers
This seminar was delivered by Julia Priddle of Channel Advisor and turned out to be really interesting and full of up to date market data. Which generally costs thousands in Mintel and Keynote reports to uncover in a concise format. The main areas of focus in this seminar was the growth in the use and importance of Facebook and it’s role in providing a ecommerce platform and covering the running theme of the day the growth of selling via the mobile channel.
Get more value from your online store. Ecommerce + email marketing: greater ROI through minimal effort.
Aman Dotani of emarsys delivered this seminar which focused on the real benefits email marketing can bring when integrated into your ecommerce website. Right at the beginning of the seminar he asked who in the room was interested in using email marketing – everyone. Then he asked, who has the time spare to do it – no one. Email marketing I feel has lost a bit of it’s buzz and is perhaps now overshadowed by other methods of communicating with customers – social media and smart phone apps etc… This seminar highlighted some easily actionable methods of integrating email easily into your marketing strategy. Here I will let you into what Aman felt were the three key areas of success:
fundamentally it is about collecting new data
use automated campaigns intelligently
optimise and make the best of your company newsletter and as always focus on adding value for the customer
I really did find this seminar very helpful and enlightening the kind of – ‘why aren’t I doing that already?’ So much so it deserves a whole blog post of it’s own so stay tuned for that.
I guess I better stop there and keep you in anticipation as to what the rest of the day consisted of, or else this blog post is going to turn into a book! Part 2 of PoLR’s time at the eCommerce Expo will be posted on Friday.
I’ll leave you with this view snapped from one of the conference rooms in Old Trafford.
