Last year I posted a blog looking at why it was of benefit to continue advertising during a recession. My case study touted Kellogg’s as being a success during the recession of the 1930’s and now we’re out of this current one it got me wondering if Kellogg’s had followed the same route during this one and if they had come out tops once again.Read more…

Last September a group of Twitter users got together in 130 cities for a Twestival. In the process they raised over $450k for 135 charities (£3675 from Glasgow) – Not bad for a night of partying and putting faces to Twitter avatars!
This March (the 25th to be precise) sees another Twestival in Glasgow (GTwestival). This year we will be raising money for Concern Worldwide who provide access to education for some of the world’s poorest children. So, save the date and get ready to buy your ticket very, very shortly!

Using the <!–more–> tag in blog posts has become second nature to me but as it’s second nature it’s also something that I realised I no longer questioned and to be honest, can’t remember if I did back in the day when I wrote my first blog post! So when I published a post the other day and forgot the <!–more–> it got me thinking about why I use it.
When I started thinking about it I went to a the blogs I’m subscribed to as I wanted to see how they did it. I noticed the SEO companies all used the <!–more–> tag while it was a 50/50 split with the non-seo focused companies.

There have been many examples of social media antics that have brought companies reputations into the firing line and very recently there was yet another clanger (more about that in a minute). In this case it was slightly different from the ‘Facebook slaggings’ that have previously caused issues for employers (think of Virgin Atlantic staff who called customers “chavs” (amongst other things) or the Argos employee who was sacked for commenting on his Facebook), in this case it was a legitimate account and acknowledged by the company to have come from an employee.

My beloved blog has been taking a back seat of late – we’ve been so busy with fulfilling customer contracts that we’ve simply just not had time. We’d been updating this on a daily basis and do feel a little guilty for letting it go so long without a post so we’ve decided to take a new stance.
Inspired by a comment at the Nation 1 ‘Blogging for Profit‘ event we’ve decided to turn over a new blogging leaf and publicly state a few aims and challenges to get our momentum going again!

We went along to a presentation by Nation1 a few weeks ago and something that was mentioned has made me think about writing this post since then.
The speaker was discussing the pros and cons of a bespoke Content Management System (CMS). Now, in the past using an off the shelf, open source CMS was something that might have tried to be hidden from clients for fear or being asked how we justify costs on ‘free’ software (we never hid it at PoLR I might add!).
Open Source can be seen as cheating by some as the software itself is free but the benefits of using this are what makes it worthwhile and the cheaper option for the client in the long run.
