Social Networking in the Afterlife!

We ran an interview on Monday with Tzafrir Rehan who developed the Next of Kin plugin for WordPress. As a spooky coincidence, on Tuesday this week a new service was announced along the same veins but open for everyone (not just WordPress users).

It’s called Legacy Locker and allows you to store passwords for all your online accounts with the idea that they will be released on your death to a person of your choosing.

Legacy Locker contacts two nominated people upon notification of the users death and they then release information after receiving a digital copy of the death certificate. That’s a brief idea of what it does but I imagine you will have more questions over security etc. At the moment there is no information on pricing (until it’s release in April) so to find out more go to the Legacy Locker website.

Given that its release date of April I’m quite inclined to think that it could be an April Fools joke but, joke or not it’s something that will get everyone talking. Think about it…when you consider that there are now tools available to calculate your online worth it might surprise you how much you could bequeath!Also, what of all the hard work you’ve put into blogging etc? Don’t want to let that go to waste do you?

Take for instance Stephen Fry (as he is the Internet name of the moment), as you would expect his social networking efforts are worth big bucks:

Twitter : @stephenfry is worth $5552 according to this.
Domain Name : www.stephenfry.com is worth $12,509 according to this.

That’s a grand total of $600,101.74 (or £437,071.07) and that’s just for the three online presences I am awake enough to work out this morning!

Granted you and I will undoubtably not be worth the same value as Monseiur Fry but it could still be worth a second thought and if not, well, at least someone can pass the news onto all those Facebook friends you’ve not seen in years!
