Avoid the business hearse, go ecommerce!
A report was published today by the Office for National Statistics showing that internet access in the home is on the increase. It states that so far in 2008, 16 million UK households have internet access which is an increase of just over 1 million form 2007. Also, up from 51% to 56% is the number of households with access to a broadband connection.
So what does this mean to you and your business? Well, if you consider that over £4.5 billion was spent online in May 2008* (equivalent to £731 for every person) in the UK alone, together with particular increases in sales of clothing, footwear and accessories. Then it would appear to indicate it to be a very lucrative time to be running an online shop despite the current UK financial climate.
As internet access increases and the penny pinching begins, buyers are becoming more savvy to hunting out bargains. It seems that buyers are happy to wait a few days for delivery or spend a few minutes searching online, if it means a finanical saving (all from the comfort of their own home). For example, I recently purchased a new camera and saved £30 (buying from Amazon) it arrived 3 days after ordering and I didn’t have to brave the shops on a Saturday morning (saving myself a lot of stress!). Unless I am in a hurry, buying online is always the first option for me and it appears I am not alone in this.
