I sense that our Random of the Week words are being sent to challenge us lately and this one from@catt231 is no different. Proving that we can twist any word or conversation back to the web (just ask our friends) here are our takes on ‘Chewbacca’.

Come on guys, give us a difficult one next week ;-)

Chewbacca

Social Networking Star Wars Stylee – Lynne Foster

We were in a presentation yesterday about Social Networking and it started off by reminding everyone what social networking is at the most basic level – chatting and interacting (gossiping even). Recently I have heard three (horror) stories of grown adults who have managed to avoid the whole world of Star Wars and have never once sat through an entire movie, they’ve never ogled Hans Solo, wondered over Princess Leah and Lukes ‘relationship’ or thought how cool it would be to have a Chewbacca costume (or maybe that’s just me).

Anyway, I’m digressing, what I wanted to do was back up the inital point made in the presentation – how we sometimes try to overdo things online with funky new techniques whilst occasionally ‘forgetting’ the beauty of simplicity. For example, forgetting that when people go on Facebook they just want to connect not jump through hoops trying to send someone a message because there is a new layout. I thought I would take this Random of the Week to give you a link to some webdesign techniques that are simple to show that beauty doesn’t have to be flashy!

Going at it like Chewy – Ryan Carlton

The temptation, when starting your business, is to get a list of everything that needs doing, delegating it efficiently (or doing it all yourself) and then getting through the list in a timely manner.

There is so much to do that it can be understandable that you just want to get your head down and get on with it, and you pretty much have to sometimes. There are many things to think about like registering bank accounts, setting up utility accounts, pairing up with suppliers, getting the product right that often some things that shouldn’t necessarily be rushed end up not getting the qualitative attention the require.

So when thinking about your companies branding on and offline and the actual web presence you really need, don’t go at it like a bull in a China shop, or should we make that statement more futuristic for the web? Don’t go at it like Chewbacca in a spaceship gangway filled with Storm Troopers!

RoTW is awesome fun on a Friday :-)

Chewy’s six feet under – Calum Macleod

Im sorry to break it to you folks. But chewie died a few years ago. Unbeknownst to some Star Wars didn’t stop with the movies and the story kept going through the books being released every year or so. In one of the books “vector prime” chewie gets killed by the Yuzhan Vong, a nasty breed of aliens. I didn’t take this news well so imagine how han solo felt. He felt awful and went on a bit of a bender as you’d expect and blamed his son for it.

How can I possibly relate this to the world of internet marketing. Ask Jeeves. They didn’t kill him but they did get rid of him a few years ago. What’s the point you might ask in getting rid of a character that has some popularity. In the case of Chewie I suppose its great for the drama. The books wouldn’t be as good if nobody ever died. I don’t think the same can be said for removing a company mascot when it’s doing a good job but it does provide the opportunity to bring him back in a blaze of glory, as Ask are currently attempting to do. Are they being successful? I’ve certainly used ask a few more times than normal this week but mainly just out of curiosity and I didn’t find anything extraordinary enough about the experience to move away from Google. If they were smart they would start an ask Chewie service which would inlcude a growl every time you searched.
