Internet Marketing with Social Networking

PoLR have recently had a great deal of interest on some research we are carrying out courtesy of Facebook. Because of the success we have become even bigger fans of social networking to drive traffic to a website. On the back of this success, we have put together 5 simple tips that you can do yourself to market your business online using a selection of our favourite social networking platforms.

We’ve stuck to five because with so many social networking sites it is easy to set up loads and forget about them!

linked11) Twit, Twit, Tweet

Get yourself a twitter account and start your tweeting and following your friends. Try to refrain from telling everyone just what you’re eating for breakfast, lunch and dinner and stick to things people might find amusing or helpful etc. You can even put (the odd) link in your ‘tweet’ to advertise your website. If you have a special offer or interesting blog post you want the world to know about then get tweeting.

2) Get your face out there

Get yourself a Facebook account and start connecting with old friends. You never know who from your past may need your services (and anyway, it’s always nice to keep in touch!). Facebook is great for setting up pages and groups too, for example look at the PoLR Facebook group (and feel free to join). You can advertise events, links, pictures and anything else that users might find interesting about your company. You can also quickly and easily email everyone in your group so it’s a ready made mailing list!

3) Linky linky

LinkedIn is fantastic for business relationships. You can network with colleagues, friends and clients, flaunt your experience and join groups related to your interest and company sector. There is also a handy part that lets you show off your website and blog to your contacts. So sign up and start filling in that profile now.

4) Stumble along

Stumbleupon is one of my favourite networking sites. Ignoring the fact you can stumble through random sites and get inspiration from places you may not normally have found (leading to many lost hours!). Stumbleupon lets you add friends and compare your interests with other ‘stumblers’ (with a % compatability rating) so you can follow ‘stumblers’ who have the same interests. You rate websites with a thumbs up or thumbs down and if you get a lot of thumbs up’s for a blog post then chances are you will see a decent amount of traffic to your site. Word of warning though, don’t just stumble your own sites or you risk being blocked!

5) Go back to school

Ecademy can be a great networking tool, although it can be a little bit of a ‘free for all’ in terms of friends requests. You can join networks in your area who can arrange networking events etc, they are great for getting your name out there and means you can put a face to a name. Ecademy is good for the amount of information you can write about you and your company. Also, contacting others is easy (you don’t need to know them) so if you see someone with services you need it’s easy to make contact and vice-versa.
