So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good night!
It has been 6 weeks since Sophia joined us for a marketing placement from the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen and what a fast 6 weeks it’s been. Sophia helped develop and launch our Show Us Your POLR Face competition, carried out various SEO techniques for the Belgrave Hotel in Glasgow and wrote more articles than she thought possible!
It’s been a really great 6 weeks and we’ll miss the Ryan/Sophia musical debates and updates on ‘Chips’
Have a fantastic last year Sophia, make the most of it before the never ending 9-5 starts! and thanks for everything during your placement.
We couldn’t let her go without answering a few questions about the work experience at PoLR first.
1) Firstly, what were you hoping to gain from the work experience and do you think you got this?
Marketing skills as a first. Secondly I had very little knowledge about SEO and how the Internet actually functions, which I was very interested in. I have to say I learned A LOT. More than I thought I would although my knowledge of SEO was pretty close to zero in the first place. I would have never thought SEO would turn out to be as interesting as it is. I love the whole black hat side to it, it sounds so evil.
2) What industry terms that stick in your mind for causing the most confusion in you first few weeks?
Metatags, black hat and white hat.
3) What jobs did you like and dislike?
Foremost I really liked doing the marketing project for PoLR. I’m really happy with the ideas I came up with. I also really enjoyed writing blogs, articles and squidoo lenses. Another thing I really liked doing was to check how the Belgrave Hotel was doing in terms of page rankings. I HATED updating directories but it had to be done. It’s just possibly the most tedious task ever thought of.
4) Is there anything you wish you could have done?
Help design the flyers and learn more about Photoshop since that’s what I have to learn in uni as well and it’s a hard program to use in the first place.
5) On the whole, what have you gained the most from this experience?
I gained SEO skills the most and a much deeper insight into how the Internet and search engine sites function. This particularly applies to how to increase traffic to a website you a working to promote.
And a cheeky wee 6th question in relation to your farewell drink tonight : What’s the first beer you want tonight!? Weihenstephan or a tasty 80/-, yum!
