RotW : Utensil.
We have decided to start a fun Friday afternoon blog. Each Friday we will be asking on Twitter for someone to suggest a random word (Random of the Week – RotW). Ryan, Calum and Myself will then write a paragraph using that word and relate it (someway) back to the world of the Interwebby.
If you would like to join in and suggest a word for next Friday then follow us at @PoLRweb.
Today’s random word was suggested by Gary Ennis of @nsdesign and he suggested ‘Utensil’. Of course now I’m wondering why he chose that particular one! Anyway, so you can see we’re not just making up words that are easy and suit us, look below at the screenshot.

Melting Pot v’s Salad Bowl – Lynne
- I love social media and networking.
- I love the way it gets people talking and no one is (or should be) afraid to state their mind.
- I love how it’s serves you up the most remarkable and sometimes, downright weird aspects of the web.
- It’s the epitome of the ‘Salad Bowl’ concept mixed together with one big fibre-optic utensil!
When I first started building social profiles I was worried about voicing an opinion that was outwith the ‘pack’ for fear of saying something stupid or having the Twitter wrath rained down upon me. As I used it more and more I came to appreciate that it didn’t matter. The online world is a forgiving world and very appreciative of indivual thought and opinion. It’s not the melting pot of hard-and-fast, ‘one rule of thought’ ideas I once thought it was but a unique playing fireld where everyone is welcome, no one is left on the bench and everyone likes a good old friendly scrap! So if you have been wary about starting off a few social media accounts my advice is to simply just ‘go for it’, everyone is friendly and if they’re not? Then ‘Pah!’… just unfollow
Internet Marketing Kitchen – Ryan
If you look at Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) metaphoirically, it could be the ‘Kitchen’ of your company’s marketing. The engine room doing all of the work churning out the results. Serving you up SERP’s on the hotplate and keeping them there warm ready for the waiting staff to go and convert! In order for this Kitchen to function well and produce high quality you’re definately going to have to have some top notch UTENSILS in order to slice up the work and chop your way to internet success. So what are the UTENSILS we use in SEO? We could probably be pretty simplistic and say that they would be your keyboard and mouse etc but take it a bit further and it is perhaps more apt to refer to you’re communities, social networks, social media sites as being your UTENSILS for SEO as these are the metaphorical tools you would be utilising everyday to carry out your work!
Digital Tools – Calum
What is a utensil. Its a tool with which you achieve some sort of task. Once the task is completed you don’t think about the UTENSIL anymore. Its only use is in getting the job done. e.g. When you’ve finished cooking a sunday roast you may use a carving knife to cut the bird but afterwards you dont congratulate the carving knife on a job well done, you thank the cook. Where am I going with this? When you’ve created a website you may be thinking about the certain piece of javascript or css code that allowed you to achieve your vision. To you the code is an essential UTENSIL when creating the site. The end product of the site will normally be created for non tech and code savvy customers who don’t really care what kind of UTENSILS were used in creating the feast for the eyes that is their site. They’re just going to want to know that it works.
With optimisation its all about finding the different digital utensils (or tools) that are on offer and making them work. Unlike the carving knife though you need to keep going back to make sure all of your digital utensils are working and that none of them have lost their effectiveness.
