WordPress 2.7 – First Impressions
I upgraded to wordpress 2.7 today after its release in December and have been immediately impressed with it’s clean new admin interface and features. The reason for the dramatic over-haul was the result of feedback from thousands of users who responded to polls, test etc and over 150 coders contributing to the new release.
I think it’s a huge improvement over the older versions but what do you think?
WordPress 2.7 resolves many of the niggly little ‘features’ of it’s predecessors, for example, in 2.6 the upload media seemed to have the odd freezing problem in Firefox. On testing today, this appears to be cleared up.
The new look is much cleaner and more advanced than before. After only a few hours playing my favourite alterations/additions are:
Sidebar : The sidebar (which is now the main navigation) can be hidden and revealed providing more space for post writing etc.
Screen Options : At the top of the admin area is a screen options tab which allow you to edit what information you want displayed on each page. For example, as I am the main author of this blog, screen space is wasted with the auther being displayed in every table. Clicking on Screen Options and the disabling the Author tickbox removed this.
Plugins : You can now search for plugins via the admin panel simply by clicking plugins – add new and searching for what you want. Once found, it’s a simple click to install the plugin and again to activate it. No more faffing around FTP’ing!
Comments : I particularly love the replying to comments via the admin panel feature. It makes replying so much more streamlined. Now we just want more comments left on here to practice replying to!
These are just my favourite features so far and I have yet to find anything I don’t like (apart from a small hiccup during the install), I’ll keep playing but I think this one’s a winner!
