Viral marketing referrs to the online marketing of your brand or product through repetitive exposure to an advert, promotion etc via social networks. Your viral campaign can take the form of a Flash game, competition, video…basically anything that has gimmicky appeal to your target demographic and will (hopefully) spread like the flu.
It’s not as you may assume, anything to do with sneezing on your competition!
It’s a terrible name with negative overtones but honestly, its good for brand awareness!
Why we love viral marketing
Viral marketing is fun. Yes, it has a ultimate aim of promoting your brand but if it’s a great video or game then do you really care if there is a hidden marketing message too?
We recently undertook a viral marketing campaing for our Show Us Your PoLR Face competition with great success. Our aim was purely to get our brand know and yesterday when we were recognised as the PoLR Face competition creators (Brad Pitt eat your heart out!) we knew it had worked!
Below are two examples of viral marketing. One a video and one a website that we have enjoyed.
Samsung LED Sheep
Samsung recently launched an LED Sheep viral video to promote their LED TV. To date, on YouTube, it has accumulated 2,933,094 views let alone the number of views through other channels and versions.
Burger Kings Subservient Chicken
In 2004 a website was launched for the Subservient Chicken, it allows you to give commands to a guy dressed in a chicken suit who will then reacts to the commands you have given.
It’s addictive, it’s fun and yes, I passed the link around.
